Jimmy's Hall review

I really like this movie more than The Wind that Shakes the Barley, from the same director. Jimmy Gralton's hall unexpectedly (for me at least, since I'm very ignorant of Ireland history and political state) brought many conflicts with the Catholic church, and the side who won Irish civil war.

Father Sheridan in particular, was bother because of what people was learning in Jimmy's hall, either that be painting, reading, etc since the church had the monopoly on what could be taught to the people. In no time, Jimmy was force to leave Ireland, labeled a communist, and only returned ten years later, which is were the movie takes off. Jimmy's hall is back on bussiness again, figuratively speaking, since it was free and it was run by a comitee, and he's deported again for life this time as an ilegal alien.


I personally like Oonagh and Jimmy's mother because I never doubt how much they love him. This characters felt very honest and sympathetic altough I found strange we never get to see Oonagh's children, since she got married after Jimmy traveled to the States the first time. His mother perfomance was a bit "dry" but I though it fit her character, like someone who has been through a lot.

My favorite scene was the dance between Oonagh and Jimmy, alone and with no music in the hall. I thought it was very romantic scene.
I personally didn't like Father Seamus character, since I felt he was only there to to say how wrong everything the church was doing and it felt pretty redundant and out of place.

    And the dance scene it's great because we hear the music but very slow, that is a nice detail. In other movie with that kind of scene we would probably listen the music in a normal intensity.

    That scene is beautiful, it has nice details and that creates a wonderful atmosphere.

A country I would like to visit

I would like to visit Canada, because in the future I would like to assist to a film school in Vancouver. I dont know much about Canada, except canadians speak French only in some areas but they also speak english, so at least they would understand a bit of what I have to say. I know it's cold on winters and usually rains a lot, but I was born on winter so it doesnt bother me. I never like warm/arid weathers anyway (so studying in México or L.A. is out of question), but I like the coast weather better.  Like I said, I would love to study filmmaking in Vancouver but I dont think I would like to live there. Basically, I would prefer to live on a place where people at least speak my native language. I would like to do every little thing a tourist does though, like eat different food and drinks, visit traditional places or learn other costums, and maybe teach the natives that it doesnt matter who you pronounce quinoa whatsoever (a personal crusade of mine).

I didn’t like much the film because I feel like the director focus a little too much on the duality of the two brothers fighting for the liberation of Ireland and their opposite views on how the conflict should be resolved. Basically, one brother is willing to compromise with England and the other doesn’t.   They both have very good reasons to fight, like when the english soldiers gratuitously killed a neighbor of theirs, but we don’t spent much time to know the people they are fighting for besides the one "hockey-like" game they are all playing at the beginning of the film.  At one point, one of the brothers, Damien, shot a friend he knew his entire life, who betrayed him and his brother. And then he tells his future wife about the time he went to vist the mother of his friend, to tell her where she could find her son’s grave. My future job

I would like to work as an editor for a film in the future, or any audiovisual content like advertising, television, etc (but mostly film, because national televison in general pay less for the editor's work and his job is very underrated). I realized while working in a short film, since I study Cine y televisión in ICEI, the work I enjoyed the most in the filmmaking process was the editing of the material in the comfort of my room with a cup of tea. It sounds a bit out of touch and lonely but it really isn’t.  Ultimately, I depend on the work of several people for the realization of the short, and my work consist in taking all that effort to create the film everyone intended to make and more.  Although post-production is the most time consuming part of the whole process (the shooting of a film might take thee weeks to two months, while post-production can take over a year), I find it to be the less stressful.
