Changes to my study programme


Good god, where do I even start with this subject?

For starters the building of Film and television should be next to Theater department building and not next to the Journalism one.

The amount of actual courses we have in common (I mean actually related to our vocations) with Journalism are so incidental that we would be better off spending more time with people from the art faculties. The communication studies are really interesting but they are too theorical for our career, and whenever the teachers try to relate the content to Filmmaking it ends up feeling forced or poorly thought-out. Maybe it's just me but I would prefer to spend more time to brush up on the skills required to my craft than studying more to have critical thinking but not actually doing anything.

Our career program is a joke, we only study sound design and practice with the equipments on one semester, for something we are going to basically be using our entire careers. And several "teachers", people who worked on film and television bussiness at least, should have some pedagogic studies on their curriculums aswell.
I believe the new program for the freshmen is far better though.

Film students have an insane amount of work outside of classroom but somehow they expect us to finish every short film and essays from one week to the next, and then the teachers call poorly done shorts "uninspired" when is clearly a case of overwork. And teacher always proceed to tell us all those bullshit anecdotes about how they faced the same problems during the shooting of a film, but completely failed to realize we, the students, still have to do work that has little to nothing to do with filmmaking to begin with. And some of us work during the week too.

Basically, it all responds to some twisted idea that we have "to produce" something (knowledge probably, I don't know). It's just frustrating when you read those tests and essays from your classmates, because all you see are parrots that repeat the same thing they memorized, or simply copy, the night before. And the one guy who actually did the effort to write something creative and interesting is evaluated the same way with the other student that just summarized a text.

Yeah, I have some strong opinions about this subject. I still like the career though, just not ICEI in general.

A country I would like to visit

I would like to visit Canada, because in the future I would like to assist to a film school in Vancouver. I dont know much about Canada, except canadians speak French only in some areas but they also speak english, so at least they would understand a bit of what I have to say. I know it's cold on winters and usually rains a lot, but I was born on winter so it doesnt bother me. I never like warm/arid weathers anyway (so studying in México or L.A. is out of question), but I like the coast weather better.  Like I said, I would love to study filmmaking in Vancouver but I dont think I would like to live there. Basically, I would prefer to live on a place where people at least speak my native language. I would like to do every little thing a tourist does though, like eat different food and drinks, visit traditional places or learn other costums, and maybe teach the natives that it doesnt matter who you pronounce quinoa whatsoever (a personal crusade of mine).

The Wind That Shakes The Barley Review

I didn’t like much the film because I feel like the director focus a little too much on the duality of the two brothers fighting for the liberation of Ireland and their opposite views on how the conflict should be resolved. Basically, one brother is willing to compromise with England and the other doesn’t.   They both have very good reasons to fight, like when the english soldiers gratuitously killed a neighbor of theirs, but we don’t spent much time to know the people they are fighting for besides the one "hockey-like" game they are all playing at the beginning of the film.  At one point, one of the brothers, Damien, shot a friend he knew his entire life, who betrayed him and his brother. And then he tells his future wife about the time he went to vist the mother of his friend, to tell her where she could find her son’s grave. My future job

I would like to work as an editor for a film in the future, or any audiovisual content like advertising, television, etc (but mostly film, because national televison in general pay less for the editor's work and his job is very underrated). I realized while working in a short film, since I study Cine y televisión in ICEI, the work I enjoyed the most in the filmmaking process was the editing of the material in the comfort of my room with a cup of tea. It sounds a bit out of touch and lonely but it really isn’t.  Ultimately, I depend on the work of several people for the realization of the short, and my work consist in taking all that effort to create the film everyone intended to make and more.  Although post-production is the most time consuming part of the whole process (the shooting of a film might take thee weeks to two months, while post-production can take over a year), I find it to be the less stressful.
